Comparison of the Potency of Polyvalent Antimeningococcus Serum Produced with Four and Six Representative Strains and That Produced with Sixty Strains, as Determined by the Agglutination Titer

چکیده

The potency of a polyvalent antimeningococcus serum, as tested by its agglutination titer, was sacrificed by immunization with a large number of strains of the meningococcus. By immunization with a limited number of representative strains, four or six, carefully selected on account of their antigenic and agglutination properties, the potency was increased three- to tenfold without sacrificing the polyvalency; that is, as tested with at least 70 heterologous strains of the meningococcus. The agglutination titer, unfortunately, is not an entirely satisfactory criterion of therapeutic potency, but it is the only practical method available that determines also the polyvalent action of antimeningococcus serum.

Simplified Production of Antimeningococcic Serum

In an attempt to simplify the manufacture of an efficacious antimeningococcus serum an experimental study has been made of a number of sera produced with a few or with single strains of meningococcus, the therapeutic polyvalent serum produced at The Rockefeller Institute with more than 50 strains being used as a standard of comparison. It was found that horses injected with an antigen limited t...

Comparison of Lactic Acid Isomers Produced by Fungal and Bacterial Strains

Many organisms produce lactic acid by fermentation, but most industrially important strains are from the genus Lactobacillus and Rhizopus oryzae. L(+)-Lactic acid is the only optical isomer for use in pharmaceutical and food industries because human body is only adapted to assimilate this form. In this research, six strains of Lactobacillus and four strains of R. oryzae (known as high producer)...

Bioproduction of Indole Acetic Acid by Rhizobium Strains Isolated from Root Nodules of Green Manure Crop, Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr.

Twenty six Rhizobium strains were isolated from root nodules of Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr. collected from different regions of Andhra Pradesh. All the 26 Rhizobium strains produced indole acetic acid (IAA), but maximum amount was produced by only five strains in yeast extract mannitol  (YEM) medium supplemented with L-tryptophan. The strains were found to elaborate maximum IAA when fed with 2.5...

Observations on the Serological and Immuno- Logical Reactions of Meningococcus Strains in Relation to Serum Production.*

This paper records a study of meningococcus strains made in connection with the production of therapeutic antimeningococcus serum. The serum distributed routinely by this laboratory since 1919 has been produced with six strains which were selected after careful serological and immunological tests as representative of the main groups of meningococci (1, 2). The broad antigenic capacities of thes...

Production of Non-Ribosomal Peptide Synthetase (NRPS)- Dependent Siderophore by Aeromonas Isolates

Background: Aeromonas species are Gram-negative ubiquitous bacteria, facultative anaerobic rods that infect both invertebrates and vertebrates. Various fish species develop hemorrhagic disease and furunculosis due to Aeromonas spp. Aeromonas strains generate certain active compounds such as siderophores, which are the final products of non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) activity. The prese...
